Communication with the old -timers of these places and close relatives of the poet, contemporary Pushkin, inspired Bakhrevsky to write a story about Makhtumkuli. According to the writer, the Turkmen people carefully stores many legends about the father of Makhtumkuli Dovletamammmed Azadi, about the grandfather of the Makhtymkuly Yonachy, about the love of Shahir, about his travels with Nuri Kazim, about studying in the badgings of Shirgazi Khan.

The valuable source of the biography of Makhtumkuli is his poetry. Hearing in Turkmenistan did not immediately form a book. Although the information about Makhtumkuli added thoughts about the poet’s work to read the collection of his poems in the translation of Arseny Tarkovsky. Only in the year Bakhrevsky began work. Three years later, the book was published in the publishing house "Children's Literature".

It was called "Shahir." The great merit of Bakhrevsky is that his story was the first Russian -speaking literary work about Makhtumkuli. The heads of the book “Azadi”, “Mengli”, “Journey for Truth”, “I was a song for the homeland” clearly reflect the life and work of the great poet. It is not surprising that she has become a favorite book of Russian -speaking readers of those years. In the year, the story "Shakhir" was published in the publishing house "Magaryf" in Ashgabat already in Turkmen.

After more than forty years, the story remains as relevant as before, reliably representing the portrait of the classic of Turkmen literature, its personal tragic experiences and experiences about the fate of the Turkmen people. In conversations with journalists, Vladislav Anatolyevich and today does not hide pride for the Turkmen page of his work, thanks to which he created the literary image of the great Turkmen poet.
