He brilliantly studied at school and planned to take only one entrance exam at MGIMO with a gold medal. But - because of one of the four set at the last moment - he was forced to prepare for exams in a few days. As the main foreign language, he got the Mongolian. He studied him with pleasure, but still his interests lay in another plane. He did not plan to become a Mongolist, so he set himself the task of studying both in the eastern and western compartment at the same time.

This meant from morning till night to attend lectures, take exams and coursework - all in double volume. You understand, studying at this university was not easy. He gained colossal experience when the translator honed the wording at negotiations on strategic offensive weapons between the USSR and the USA in Geneva. In October, Churkin answered the questions of the Americans gathered in the Catholic Cathedral to listen to the Soviet diplomat.

And working with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of our country Evgeny Maksimovich Primakov, Sergei Viktorovich Lavrov, many of our other brilliant diplomats, of course, gave Vitaly Ivanovich a vast experience, helped to lighten his professional acumen. And multiple trips to the former Yugoslavia, where there was a bloody war, his sincere desire to reconcile the opposing aspects of this complex conflict, discussion with the NATO, when Vitaly Ivanovich represented our country as an ambassador of Russia in Belgium, then a difficult business trip to Canada ... I think all this together and formed Churkin as a diplomat, as a personality.

Irina Churkina: Our first meeting occurred in the Highlands of Dombay. I went with two close friends immediately after entering the Institute of Foreign Languages ​​named after Maurice Torez.

And Vitaly - a young diplomat, a translator working at the OSV -2 negotiations - flew to Moscow in a short break between sessions and bought a burning ticket to the same ski resort. We met, but a few days later our holidays ended, and my friends and I returned home, and he continued a business trip to Geneva. The correspondence novel began, because then there were no other ways to communicate.

They wrote to each other with every mail, and, by the way, in surprisingly, all the letters were preserved. So Vitaly was aware of how I continue to study at the institute, and I - how he spends his free time from translation duties, riding mountain skiing, playing with colleagues in ping -pong. Children are firmly standing on the path they chosen, and their successes depend on their hard work and abilities. The main thing is that he instilled in children: decency, respect for relatives, for his native places.

He himself was infinitely respectful of his parents Maria Petrovna and Ivan Vasilievich. Father - an aviation engineer, mother - a housewife who was engaged in the upbringing of her son - a veteran of the Great Patriotic War. And Mom Maria Petrovna was proud of her son’s successes, took an active part in his affairs, collected clippings of publications about him in newspapers. We practically did not see him at home when the spouse flew to the former Yugoslavia as a special representative of the President of Russia. In two and a half years, he made only 25 such trips to Belgrade. It should be borne in mind that regular aircraft stopped flying there and had to get, as they say, on the crossroads. But there were still trips to Zagreb, Sarajevo, Palais, Skopier.

Possessing enormous experience and knowledge, he knew how to convince his opponents, therefore, outside the headquarters, relations with colleagues were generally friendly and even.
